Ever since I first arrived in Mexico, I’ve dreamed of exploring the country beyond its well-known tourist destinations. Mexico is an incredibly rich and vibrant country—cost-effective to explore once you’re inside, especially if you’re on a tourist visa or hold temporary residency. The ease of travel between states makes day trips like this one not only possible but deeply rewarding. Recently, my son and I took a day trip to Izamal, a place that has been on my radar for quite some time. Known as La Ciudad Amarilla—The Yellow City—Izamal is one of Mexico’s designated Pueblos Mágicos, or “magical towns,” a recognition given to places rich in culture, history, and beauty. Our journey began at the Mérida train station, where we purchased our tickets and boarded a comfortable ride through the Yucatán landscape. Traveling by train gave us time to relax and take in the scenery before arriving in Izamal’s golden glow. Stepping off the train felt like stepping back in time. The entire city is bathed in yellow paint, with colonial buildings, cobblestone streets, and a warm, welcoming vibe that immediately drew us in. We wandered the quiet streets, visited artisan shops filled with handcrafted goods, and explored a small local market that offered a glimpse into everyday life. We stumbled upon a beautiful little shop where we browsed local arts, crafts, jewelry, and home items—each piece telling a story of the Yucatán’s rich culture. We marveled at the historical architecture, the fusion of Mayan and Spanish colonial influence, and the peaceful energy that surrounded us. This trip was more than sightseeing—it was about experiencing a different side of Mexico, one that’s often overlooked. Too many people focus solely on beach resorts or tourist-heavy areas. But the interior of the country holds so much depth: ancient ruins, cenotes, quiet towns, and welcoming communities steeped in tradition. This day trip reminded me why I fell in love with Mexico—and why I continue to explore its many treasures. I plan to visit more ruins, cenotes, and magical towns across the country. Each journey is another opportunity to share the real Mexico with those curious about traveling here with intention and openness. So take a walk with me through Izamal.
